Garden walls in Darlington

A low garden wall can edge a patio, hold up a bank, create a raised bed or give you extra seating. Get the footing and the coping right and it will outlast the fence, the shed and probably the lawn.

Kinds of garden wall

  • Patio walls. A few courses around the patio edge, often with a wide coping that doubles as a seat.
  • Raised beds. Brick, block or stone, filled with soil. Kind on your back and good for giving a flat garden some structure.
  • Retaining walls. Where ground has been cut back to make a level patio, these hold the higher soil in place.
  • Dividing walls. Low walls that separate the patio from the lawn or define a seating area.

On the older streets, a wall in red brick to match the house or in natural stone tends to look right. Newer houses can take brick, rendered block or a clean-lined stone.

How a wall should be built

  1. Footing. A concrete strip footing, wide and deep enough for the wall and the ground. Clay soils need it deeper.
  2. Coursing. Level, plumb courses with fully filled mortar joints.
  3. Damp-proof course and coping. These stop water soaking into the wall and freezing, which is what breaks bricks apart.
  4. Drainage for retaining walls. Saturated soil exerts a lot of pressure. Free-draining backfill and weep holes let water escape. Higher retaining walls need to be properly designed, and we'll say if yours does.

Rules worth knowing

A garden wall usually doesn't need planning permission if it's no more than 1 metre high next to a road used by vehicles (including the footpath beside it), or 2 metres elsewhere. Listed buildings and conservation areas, including parts of Darlington's West End and Hurworth, have stricter rules. Walls on or right next to a boundary may fall under the Party Wall etc. Act 1996, so speak to your neighbour early on.

Part of a wider garden project

Walls are most often built with a new patio, steps or when a garden is being levelled. Planning everything together gets the levels, drainage and materials right first time.

Questions people ask

Will I need planning permission?

Usually not, provided the wall is under 1m beside a road used by vehicles or 2m elsewhere and the property isn't listed. If you're not sure, Darlington Borough Council's planning team can advise.

Should I choose brick or stone?

Brick that matches the house usually looks most natural. Stone suits sandstone patios and older or village properties. Ask us to bring samples.

Can you repair an existing wall?

Often. Crumbling joints can be repointed and damaged sections rebuilt. A wall leaning because the footing has failed generally needs rebuilding.

How much does a garden wall cost?

It depends on length, height, materials and footing. See what affects patio prices or ask for a free quote.
